Karnal: “While the risk of a blood clot forming on a stent is only 0.6 per cent per year, if it occurs the risk of death from a sudden heart attack is a sobering 40 per cent.”Says Dr Rajneesh Kapoor

Dr Rajneesh Kapoor- Senior Director , Interventional Cardiology , heart Institute , Medanta The Medicity , Dr Rajeev Gupta , Physician & Managing Director , Amritdhara Hospital , Karnal and Dr Mayank Goyal , Interventional Cardiologist at Amritdhara Hospital , Karnal were speaking in a press conference on stent safety &application of OCT (OpticalCoherence Tomography) in stent placement.

Dr Rajeev Gupta  said “Due to unprecedented rise in heart attacks among Indians and angioplasty being gold standard treatment, public awareness on stent safety and application of newer technologies in treatment protocols to safeguard public health is almost the need of the hour.”

Dr Rajneesh Kapoor tells that “The two major causes of stent failure are stent thrombosis (ST) & In-Stent restenosis (ISR). Data from stent registries shows rate of ST less than 1% in first year and around .2 to .4% thereafter per year; rates of ISR around 5%.”

Adding further he says that “incorrect stent placement and quality of stent are 2 major factors that may lead to stent failure. The stent failure rate in late nineties, with use of bare metal stents, was around 40% but with Drug Eluting stents this has come down to less that 10 percent.”

He says that “use of OCT technology is greatly helpful in preventing post angioplasty complications, at time life-saving too.

He says “Using OCT, we send a high-resolutioncamera, thinner than a human hair, to record a continuous super high-resolutionimage of the shape, twists and turns and the path of the arteries. Through this we can have a 3D image of the inside of the artery, using which we place stent if required.”

“This helps us with almost accurate stent deployment hence minimising any complication risk to negligible.” He adds

Adding further to prevent stent related complication he says that “as a learned fraternity and working towards welfare of patients we always prefer stents that are backed by big data on safety, efficacy and quality.

He tells “In this regard all stents with USFDA approval are considered to be better than else. They are made of superior quality, are very thin, available in many size and contains most advanced medicines coated over them; making them most safe for the patient. And after price control on stents they are all available at least or same price.”

Dr Mayank Goyal adds that “episodes of heart attacks are on a rampant rise in Haryana. He says from his patient experience that consumption of desi ghee in huge quantities, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, less sleep and stress are top most risk factors for heart attack in people of Haryana.”
